Adam Holliday and his brother William, traveling west from Lancaster County in 1768, stopped at this spot, where Adam drove a stake into the ground and said that whoever was alive one hundred years later would see a tolerable sized town there and that this would be near about its center. Adam Holliday served under Colonel Armstrong at Kittaning in 1756, under General Forbes at the capture of Fort Duquesne in 1758, and under Colonel Bouquet at Fort Pity in 1763. He built Fort Holliday, assisted in building Fort Fetter, and in 1776 was a member of both the Committee of Safety and Captain Paxton's Ranging Company of Bedford County.
