Port Clinton Light, at Water Works Park in Port Clinton, Ohio, began as a harbor aid on the west pier and evolved through several incarnations as the port changed. The first lighthouse, a 40-foot split-stone tower, remained in use until 1870 despite early doubts about its necessity, and local complaints when its lantern was removed showed its value to the harbor. A new wooden lighthouse entered service on the extended west pier in 1896 and became Ohio’s shortest recorded lighthouse at 20 feet tall. Automated in 1926 and deactivated in 1927, it was moved in 1952, donated back to the city in 2011, restored, and placed at its current park site in 2015.
