Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts is a major cultural institution in downtown Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, uniting science education, live performance, and film in one complex. Established in September 1997 through a $52.7 million public-private partnership and opened in 1999, it was named for Uncas A. Whitaker and Helen F. Whitaker, whose foundation and fund provided more than $8 million. The center includes the two-floor UPMC Science Center with more than 240 exhibits, the Select Medical Digital Cinema, and the 698-seat Sunoco Performance Theater. With additional classrooms, galleries, and gathering spaces, it has long supported resident arts organizations while linking science and the performing arts.
