The Lockheed T-33, known as the “T-Bird,” was designed by Lockheed in 1948 and produced until 1959. Used as a jet trainer, it had a cockpit capacity for two people, a top speed of 600 miles per hour, and a range of almost 1,400 miles. More than 7,000 T-Birds were built, but only a few hundred remain today. One such aircraft, on loan from the United States Navy and once displayed at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York City, reflects Westchester County Airport’s history as the home of the 105th Flying Unit of the New York Air National Guard from 1948 to 1984 and honors the men and women of the New York Air National Guard.
