This building has been an important part of Annandale's history, first serving as a schoolhouse in Southside Township before the turn of the century. During the winter of 1911, it was dragged across the ice on Pleasant Lake to its current location, where it continued as a schoolhouse for another decade. After a new school was built on Cherry Avenue in the early 1920s, the building became home to village offices and the local library, which had begun in 1899 with 317 books. Jail cells in the basement held individuals locally rather than sending them to the county jail, and residents later recalled sneaking looks at them while using the basement bathrooms. Over time the library took over the entire building, and in the 1960s it joined the Great River Regional Library system to better serve Annandale. The building remained Annandale's library for 80 years until 2003, when the library moved next door. It then housed Snooty Fox Gallery from 2004 to 2012, Café Jules beginning in 2014, and In Hot Water, moved here from across the street by Nikki Seaberg and Megan Champlin in 2021, while continuing to connect customers with the building's long place in local history and with work by local artists.
