The Civil War was fought between Union and Confederate armies rather than simply between North and South, and perhaps as many as 300,000 Southerners served in the Union Army. Much of the Appalachian South from West Virginia to Winston County was pro-Union, and Winston provided 239 Union soldiers and 112 Confederate soldiers, 21 of whom shared last names. A Civil War soldier portrayed as one-half Union and one-half Confederate symbolizes this war within a war and honors Winstonians in both armies. By 1865, the shiny new swords of 1861 were broken like the spirits of the men who bore them, and the blue and gray uniforms once fresh and clean had become worn and patched like the bodies and souls they contained. Johnny Reb and Billy Yank, disillusioned by the realities of war, shared dual destinies as pragmatic Americans in a reunited nation.
