Dr. Howard L. Saylor, Jr., moved with his family to Huron from Cogswell, North Dakota, attended Huron schools, graduated from St. John's Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin, received his pre-med education at Huron College and the University of South Dakota, and continued at the University of South Dakota Medical School and Northwestern University. After serving in World War II as a Captain and Battalion Surgeon with the 34th Division, 135th Infantry Regiment, he completed his surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic. He returned to Huron in 1950 to begin his medical practice and retired in 2000, after more than 50 years in medicine. He was a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, Chief of Staff, Board Member, and Chairman of the Surgical Committee at Huron Regional Medical Center, a member of the Priestly Society at the Mayo Clinic, Regional Trauma Chairman of the American College of Surgeons, a Founding Member of Dakota Care Insurance Company, Past President of the South Dakota State Medical Association, and a member of numerous other medical boards. He also served the Huron community in many capacities, including membership in the Huron Masonic Lodge #26 AF and AM, York and Scottish Rite, Yelduz Shrine, James Valley Shrine Club and Motor Corps, Forrest McMullan VFW Post #1776, Huron Elks Lodge #44, William Reaves American Legion Post #7, Huron Sertoma Club, North Central Athletic Society, and the Huron Chamber and Visitors Bureau. Dr. Saylor and his wife Mary Ann Peterson were married for nearly 50 years and had three children and seven grandchildren.
