Fishing Cone, also known as Fishing Pot Hot Springs, is a geothermal feature in Yellowstone’s West Thumb Geyser Basin at the edge of Yellowstone Lake. Once a true geyser that could send water up to 40 feet in the early 20th century, it became a hot spring after rising lake levels inundated the cone and cooler conditions ended its eruptions. It became famous through frontier stories of catching fish in the lake and cooking them immediately in the boiling spring, a tale spread by members of the 1870 Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition and later woven into tourist lore. Yellowstone banned boiling live fish there beginning in 1912.
