Firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the Mogollon Rim Country included Chuck Cochane, a pilot of a TBM air tanker who died in the Roberts fire on 6/15/61; Constantine "Corky" Kodz, a Forest Service employee, and pilot Arthur Goodnow, who died in the Hatchery fire on 6/21/61 in an aircraft crash after their aircraft was struck by another aircraft; Ernie Cachini of the Zuni Crew, who was struck by lightning during the Horton fire on 7/10/89; and Sandra J. Bachman, James E. Ellis, Joseph L. Chacon, Alex C. Contreras, James L. Denny, and Curtis E. Springfield of the Perryville Crew, who were burned over during the Dude fire on 6/26/90.
