Historic Roanoke City Market, also known as the Farmer's Market, is the oldest continuously operating open-air market in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It opened in 1882, when licenses were issued to 25 area hucksters, and the first City of Roanoke Charter formally authorized a municipally owned market in 1884. The Farmer's Market included outdoor vendors and sellers inside the first City Market Building, completed in 1886. After a fire destroyed the original building, it was replaced by the current building in 1922. Following many years as an indoor market, the City Market Building was renovated into a food court in the mid 1980s. Vendors offer locally grown plants, fresh fruits and vegetables, local meats, baked goods, jewelry, soaps, and other handcrafted items.
