The Bethesda Methodist Episcopal Church was built in 1879 to replace an older chapel and is an excellent example of Greek Revival architecture. For more than a century it was a center of activity in this rural area, but regular church services ended during the 1970s. When the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation purchased the building in 2000, it stood vacant and in poor condition. The church and cemetery were restored as an important historic site while retaining as much surviving material as possible, and the restoration was completed by 2008. Located within Trap Pond State Park, the church continues to serve the community through special events, park programs, and private use. One of the few surviving rural churches once common in the area, it was purchased with funding from the state's Open Space program, and an endowment for maintenance and upkeep was created as part of the Delaware State Parks Trust Fund managed by the Delaware Community Foundation.
