Old Greenville, one-quarter mile north, served as the Jefferson County seat from 1803 to 1825 and was an important planting, ginning, and mercantile center. Prominent in its history were David Hunt, Joseph and Jefferson Davis, Andrew Jackson, Thomas Hinds, and Cato West.
