Soldier Creek Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area in the Pine Ridge section of the Nebraska National Forest in northwestern Nebraska. Established in 1986 and managed by the U.S. Forest Service, it is the larger of Nebraska’s two federal wilderness areas. Its history includes use as a timber reservation for nearby Fort Robinson and as horse pasture by the U.S. Cavalry from the late 19th century through World War II. In 1989, a major wildfire destroyed nearly 90 percent of its ponderosa pine forest, and recovery has left a mix of regrowth and open country. The area supports diverse wildlife and is protected from roads, buildings, logging, mining, and motorized or mechanized travel.
