Massena, located along three rivers including the Raquette River, was settled in the late 18th century. Its early economy was partly based on health spas. The modern town is a center for the generation of hydro-electric power, aluminum production at Alcoa, and the commerce of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The Raquette, Grasse, and St. Lawrence Rivers also make Massena and the surrounding area a popular destination for fishing, boating, camping, and other outdoor activities. The multiple waterways in the Massena area attract fishing enthusiasts from near and far, with walleye, bass, bullhead, and perch among the common catches.
