Townshend State Park in Townshend, Vermont, occupies 41 acres within the larger Townshend State Forest on Bald Mountain’s north slope and serves as a campground and trailhead for the mountain. The state acquired the land in 1912, and the forest later expanded beyond its original size. A fire tower went up on Bald Mountain in 1924, and a picnic area followed later that decade. Between 1933 and 1938, the Civilian Conservation Corps built most of the park’s visible facilities, including the central ranger station, campsites, fireplaces, and water features. Because these 1930s recreational structures remain unusually intact, the CCC-built core is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
