Eugene Blakely Sloan, son of Eugene Blakely Sloan I and Janie Pressly Lindsay Sloan, was born on February 22, 1922, in Clinton, S.C., and died on April 6, 1969, at Hunting Island, S.C. He was an editor, author, photographer, naturalist, and teacher. He was educated at Erskine College and the University of S.C. Law School, served as an Army Air Corps officer during World War II, and was the first recipient of the Gonzales Award for Distinguished Journalism. He wrote knowingly about South Carolina, its people, places, issues, and its life's blood, and was remembered for working with clean hands and an honest heart, with dedication, fairness, and intent on good. He believed in and practiced a strong philosophy of life expressed in the lines, "This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man," and "No man is an island...And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee..."
