Hopewell Big Woods is a protected forest landscape in southeastern Pennsylvania covering about 73,000 acres across northern Chester and southern Berks Counties, much of it within the Schuylkill River watershed. It is closely connected to Pennsylvania’s early iron industry, as large areas were cut for charcoal to supply nearby furnaces, and that past remains visible in numerous historic sites, including thirty-five listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since 2001, a regional partnership has worked to protect forests, water, rare species, recreation, trails, and heritage tourism. The area is also valued for dark skies, wildlife habitat, and public outdoor recreation in a heavily settled region.
