Admiral Marc A. Mitscher, U. S. Navy, was born in Hillsboro on January 26, 1887. A pioneer in naval aviation, a 1910 graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy and the Naval Flying School, and Commander of Naval Air Task Force 58, he became famed in World War II for its destruction of Japanese sea power. Throughout a career marked by dedicated purpose and distinguished achievement, he proved the effectiveness of naval aircraft carriers. For his brilliant leadership, indomitable fighting spirit, and many conspicuous firsts in naval aviation, he received many high decorations from the U. S. and foreign governments. He died on February 3, 1947, and lies in Arlington National Cemetery, remembered and highly respected by all men of naval aviation.
