J.V. "Pinky" Wilson, born in 1897 in Florence, Texas, authored the Aggie War Hymn, regarded as the most famous fight song in the world. He ranched in Florence through 1950, then bought a ranch near Bertram in Burnet County, where he lived with his wife Erma and son Joe until 1970, when the family moved to Burnet. After entering Texas A&M, he joined the Marine Corps in his junior year and fought in the Meuse-Argonne Battle from 9/26 to 11/11/1918, a terrible struggle in which America lost more than 26,000 killed and over 100,000 wounded. During or shortly after that battle, he wrote the War Hymn on the back of an envelope. Over the years, the song became world famous and is sung at all Texas A&M athletic events. In his honor are four memorial tributes: a life-size bronze statue on the Texas A&M campus facing Kyle Field, one of only four statues allowed on the campus; the same statue in Bertram; a granite cenotaph in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin; and a granite tombstone and grave blankets at Post Mountain Cemetery in Burnet, the burial site of Pinky and Erma Wilson.
