De Witt County was created on March 24, 1846, from Gonzales, Victoria, and Goliad counties and was organized on July 13, 1846, with Cuero as the county seat. It was named in honor of Green De Witt, a Texas empresario who was born in Kentucky on September 16, 1797, and died in Mexico on May 18, 1835.
