Charles Sumner Post No. 25 in Chestertown, Maryland, is a rare surviving hall built for African American Civil War veterans and now serves as a museum. Built about 1908 in the historically Black Scotts Point neighborhood as a practical two-story lodge hall named for Charles Sumner, it is one of only two known Grand Army of the Republic halls in the United States constructed for Black veterans. Abandoned sometime between 1985 and 2002, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, later identified as threatened in 2012, and restored and reopened to the public in 2014, preserving both the building and the community history it embodies.
