Emerson P. Hawley, known as "Pink," was born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, on December 5, 1872. By the time he and his brother Elmer, known as "Blue," entered Wayland Academy in 1887, the brothers were already a well-known battery, with Pink on the mound and Blue behind the plate, and they became the top players for the Red & White. Elmer died in 1891 on the eve of graduation, but Emerson graduated and on August 13, 1892, pitched his first major league game for the St. Louis Browns in the National League. Pink also played in the National League for the Pirates, Reds, and Giants. His final major league season came in 1901 with the new Milwaukee Brewers in the American League. His best year was 1895 with the Pirates, when he won 31 games and batted .308, earning the nickname "The Duke of Pittsburgh." Hawley remained in baseball through 1909, then returned to Beaver Dam to raise his family and enter business. He died on September 19, 1938.
