On July 15, 1944, an Army Air Force B-24 bomber piloted by Blockville native Lt. Levine Nelson fell from the sky two hundred yards from this site while en route to the European theater of World War II. Six of the nine crewmen perished in the inferno, including Lt. Nelson. The dead were Cpl. Cleo Boody, Sgt. Arthur L. Brown, 2nd Lt. John Jurcazak, 2nd Lt. Levine S. Nelson, 2nd Lt. Vernon E. Splitz, and Cpl. Harold L. Stanley; the survivors were Sgt. James W. Caldwell Jr., Cpl. Phillip J. Marks, and Cpl. Louis R. Moldovan.
