Production mine trucks with capacities of 170 and 240 tons were used at Hibbing Taconite Company immediately north of this site. The 170-ton trucks used tires mounted on wheels 4.25 feet in diameter, with tire diameters of 10.5 feet, and each tire needed only 162 revolutions to cover a mile. The 240-ton truck tires cost more than $20,000 each, so a complete set of six cost more than $118,000. Although these tires were 50 ply with tread depth greater than 3 inches, sharp taconite fragments could puncture them. Standing nearly 12 feet high, the 240-ton truck tires were mounted on 4.75-foot-diameter wheels and had a maximum width of 40 inches.
