Sam Ealy Johnson Jr. and his wife, Rebekah Baines Johnson, bought this residence in 1913 and raised five children here. Sam was an educator and a six-term Texas legislator, and Rebekah was an educator and journalist. The frame house, built in 1901, features simple classical details and decorative bargeboards of milled wood, with each wing one room deep for light and ventilation. Its various open and enclosed porches reflect additions made over the years. In 1937, the Johnsons' eldest son, Lyndon, launched his first campaign for Congress from the east porch, beginning his rise to the U.S. presidency.
