On Christmas Night, 1776, George Washington crossed the Delaware River from Pennsylvania to New Jersey at this site with 2400 men, artillery, and supplies, then marched nine miles to attack the Hessians stationed at Trenton, where the Battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776, brought a major victory for Washington’s army. The crossing force included Washington’s staff, the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry, the Commander in Chief's Guard, a bridgehead and advance guard, Brig. Gen. Adam Stephen’s Brigade, Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene’s Division with the brigades of Hugh Mercer, Lord Stirling, and Roche deFermoy, artillery under Col. Henry Knox with companies from Continental and state artillery units reinforced by seamen from the Pennsylvania State Navy, and Maj. Gen. John Sullivan’s Division with the brigades of Col. Paul D. Sargent and Col. John Glover.
