Rock Eagle in Putnam County, Georgia, is a prehistoric bird-shaped effigy mound built from thousands of pieces of white quartzite, measuring about 102 feet long and 120 feet across. Archaeologists date it to the Woodland period, sometime between about 1000 BC and AD 1000, though the exact identity of its builders and the bird it represents remain uncertain. Its ceremonial significance is evident, and evidence of cremation burials suggests a possible link to death or burial practices. One of only two known bird effigy mounds east of the Mississippi River, it is now protected, studied, and managed by the University of Georgia.
