Established in 1909, Sonoma State Historic Park preserves six properties around Sonoma’s central plaza that together trace the town’s mission-era origins, Mexican rule, the Bear Flag Revolt, and its growth into an American town. Its sites include Mission San Francisco Solano, founded in 1823 as Alta California’s last and northernmost mission; the Sonoma Barracks, built in 1835 for frontier troops and later used as Bear Flag headquarters; the Blue Wing Inn and Toscano Hotel, which reflect Sonoma’s changing commercial life; and La Casa Grande and Lachryma Montis, closely tied to Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, a central figure in Sonoma’s early development.
