At the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, the USS Iowa Museum preserves the battleship USS Iowa, lead ship of her class and one of the last U.S. Navy battleships built. Commissioned in 1943, she served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War, earned 11 battle stars, and hosted three U.S. presidents. San Pedro’s own naval past deepens the site’s significance, as it housed the United States Battle Fleet from 1919 to 1940. Transferred for display in 2011 and opened to the public in 2012, the ship now offers tours, education programs, ceremonies, and observances as a preserved warship and public history site.
