In 1564, the colonists of la Caroline, including noblemen, soldiers, workmen, and sailors, worked hard to prepare their post for shelter from the weather and defense against enemies. They measured out a triangular piece of ground for their fort and settlement, cleared the site of trees with shovels, cutting hooks, and hatchets, and quickly erected the fort and storage barns, with other buildings following soon after. The first guardhouse, built in the center of the fort, stood too high and was blown over by fierce winds. Baking ovens were placed outside the fort to keep fire away from the powder magazine. After the common buildings were finished, the colonists began building their homes. The original site and exact placement of the colony and fort remain unknown to historians.
