In September 1900, Wilbur Wright arrived at Elizabeth City and stayed for several days at the Arlington Hotel while waiting for a boat to Kitty Hawk during his initial trip to North Carolina to explore the possibility of manned flight. He wrote, "No one knows anything about the place or how to get there."
