On June 25, 1864, Confederate reserves and citizens from Halifax, Charlotte, and Mecklenburg counties held the railroad bridge over the Staunton River, nine miles west, against Union cavalry raiding to destroy railroads. When the Union force tried to burn the bridge, it was repulsed. Meanwhile Confederate cavalry attacked from the rear, and the raiders then retreated to Grant's army at Petersburg.
