Square Butte is a prominent 7,140-foot sandstone summit on Navajo Nation land in northern Arizona, southeast of Page and east of Kaibito. Rising more than 700 feet above the surrounding terrain beside Arizona State Route 98, it is known in Navajo as Tsé Dikʼání, or “square rock,” reflecting its blocky shape. Its runoff flows into Square Butte Wash or Potato Canyon and ultimately reaches Lake Powell within the Colorado River basin. The butte is formed of Jurassic Entrada Sandstone, including the Cow Springs Member, over the Carmel Formation, and stands in an arid climate with hot, very dry summers and chilly winters.
