The North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Co. and Mechanics and Farmers Bank building, a 1921 Neoclassical Revival landmark, anchored Durham's "Black Wall Street." It served as the home office of North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company from 1921 to 1965 and as the home office of M&F Bank since 1922. Designed by Rose & Rose of Durham, it is recognized as No. 2 National Historic Landmark.
