Garfield Park Conservatory, one of the largest greenhouse conservatories in the United States, grew from Chicago’s early park greenhouses into a major horticultural and civic institution on the city’s West Side. Conceived by Jens Jensen and built in 1906–1907, it replaced older conservatories in Humboldt, Douglass, and Garfield parks with an unusual naturalistic design that blended architecture and landscape. Its collections include plants from around the world, notable historic specimens, and longstanding public programs. After restoration in 1994 and major storm damage in 2011, it recovered and continued its educational and community mission, earning national and state recognition in 2012 and 2018.
