Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower bought a run-down farm near Gettysburg in 1950 after years of moving between military posts, turning it into their long-sought permanent home. As Eisenhower’s presidency began, the property was extensively rebuilt into both a working black Angus cattle farm and a place for rest, family life, and recreation. From 1955 through the end of his presidency, he spent substantial time there, including during his recovery from a heart attack. The farm also became an informal setting for diplomacy, hosting major international and political figures. Donated to the National Park Service in 1967, it remained the Eisenhowers’ home until their deaths.
