On Papscanee Island in Schodack, New York, this historic district preserves a long-occupied Staats family landscape centered on the Joachim Staats House, a two-story stone dwelling built in 1696 and enlarged around 1790 and about 1880. The grounds also include a former sloop landing and a small family cemetery, linking the property to river travel and generations of family life. A second Staats house, built in 1758, was destroyed by fire in 1973 and survives only as an archaeological site. Owned continuously by the Staats family for nine generations, the property reflects both exceptional age and enduring family occupation.
