Founded in 1909 by John Cotton Dana, The Newark Museum of Art grew from early holdings of Japanese prints, silks, and porcelains into New Jersey’s largest museum. Its collections span American, decorative, contemporary, Asian, African, ancient, and other arts, while also reflecting Dana’s broader commitment to science, history, and technology. The campus expanded from its original quarters in the Newark Public Library into a larger complex that includes the Ballantine House and the Dreyfuss Memorial Garden. The institution is especially renowned for its Tibetan collection, built after 1911 into one of the finest and largest in the Western Hemisphere, and it also maintains major science collections and a planetarium.
