Erie Zoo, formally the Erie Zoological Park and Botanical Garden of Northwestern Pennsylvania, is a small city zoo and garden in Glenwood Park in Erie, Pennsylvania, combining animal exhibits, botanical gardens, and a greenhouse on 15 acres. Its origins trace to about 1927, when an elephant named Tom-boy arrived as a gift to the city, and it opened as a park in 1930. The zoo now keeps more than 400 animals and over 600 plant species, draws more than 400,000 visitors annually, and reflects major expansion under John M. Cochran and the Erie Zoological Society. It operates through a public-private partnership between the city, park authority, and nonprofit society.
