Genesee Valley Park, a large county park on Rochester’s south side along the Genesee River, grew from land acquired in 1888 for South Park and was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. He planned a landscape of contrasting uses, with open pastoral character on the east and more active recreation on the west; a flock of 80 sheep added in 1893 helped reinforce that vision. The park later evolved through expansion of its golf course and the 1918 merging of the New York State Barge Canal with the river. Despite later disruption from the Genesee Expressway, it remains a major recreational and trail junction with distinctive canal and river crossings.
