Chamizal National Memorial was established to commemorate the diplomatic settlement of a long-standing boundary dispute between the United States and Mexico and reflects the idea that differences should be settled with mutual respect and understanding. Carlos Flores's mural Nuestra Herencia expresses the diversity of a common heritage that brings this border community together. The 18- by 120-foot painting is one of a series of major murals throughout El Paso funded by the Junior League of El Paso. Flores painted it in 1992, touched it up in 1997, and it was restored after a commission in 2014, with completion in 2016 for the memorial's 50th anniversary and the National Park Service Centennial.
