The Muscle Shoals National Recreational Trail complex is a 17-mile paved and primitive trail and bikeway for public use on TVA’s Muscle Shoals Reservation. Part of the National Recreation Trail System, it links numerous historical sites, including Civil War earthworks, the Old Railroad Bridge, remnants of a steam plant built during World War I, the original railroad used during construction of Wilson Dam, trails and structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and TVA’s Old First Quarters. The trail also passes the Hall Memorial Native Plant Garden and wildlife habitat demonstration areas. In 1998, TVA established a formal relationship with the Wildlife Habitat Council, a Maryland-based nonprofit that encourages corporations to enhance wildlife habitats on their properties, with biologists working with member companies to inventory wildlife populations, identify enhancement projects, and form employee teams to administer them. Wildlife projects typically include maintaining wildlife food plots, providing artificial nesting structures for bluebirds, tree swallows, wood ducks, and other species, and establishing native grass and wildflower meadows. TVA projects certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council include Colbert Fossil Plant, Raccoon Mountain Pumped Storage Plant, and the Muscle Shoals Reservation. The trail is also designated as part of the northwest loop of the North Alabama Birding Trail. At the Rockpile Recreation Area, Waterfall Walk follows the banks of the Tennessee River with views of historic Wilson Dam and ends at a series of waterfalls. The Native Plant Garden Trail honors Thomas “Whitey” Hall, a TVA botanist and professor at the University of North Alabama, with a garden of native plants and memorial benches. The Old Railroad Bridge Trail crosses a bridge originally constructed in 1840 with two levels, one for trains and one for wagons and pedestrians, and now used only by pedestrians. The Old First Quarter Trail is an unsurfaced 1-mile loop with an easy grade that attracts birdwatchers, photographers, wildflower enthusiasts, and others seeking a quiet walk in the woods. The Rockpile Trail was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s as part of its work creating trails, picnic areas, pavilions, and overlooks for public enjoyment of public lands.
