Icelandic settlers in Lincoln County organized their first congregation in 1879, when the number of Icelandic homesteads there never exceeded 55 and 32 charter members signed the constitution. Annual dues of 50 cents were payable in two installments. The congregation was organized to uphold the Lutheran faith and the purity of the Icelandic language, to further cultural advancement, to establish an enclosed cemetery plot, and to help maintain the health and welfare of the Icelandic community. The first church was built in 1899. It burned to the ground in 1922, and another church building was built in 1925. That church was moved to the Lincoln County Museum at Hendricks in 1994.
