Inniswood Metro Gardens in Westerville, Ohio, grew from the estate of sisters Grace and Mary Innis into a 123-acre botanical garden and nature preserve within the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system. After buying the land in 1960 and moving there in 1961, the sisters shaped it as both a cultivated garden and a protected natural landscape, reflecting Grace’s interest in art and horticulture and Mary’s love of woods and wildlife. Following Grace’s death in 1966, Mary arranged for the property to pass to Metro Parks, and it opened to the public in 1984. Today it features more than 2,000 plant species, themed gardens, and woodland trails.
