Brigadier General Cooper held Scanland's and Gillette's cavalry squadrons in reserve to guard the supply depot, then as the battle progressed ordered them to join the Creek regiments protecting his left flank. When the Confederate troops began retreating, he directed Colonel Walker's 1st Choctaw and Chickasaw Regiment to delay the Federal advance while food stores, supplies, ammunition, and equipment were evacuated. Teamsters loaded as many supplies as possible and retreated toward North Fork Town on the Canadian River, while commissary and quartermaster stores were burned as Federal attacks continued until about 12 o'clock, when the lines were broken and the entire force was routed. Afterward, Federal troops reached the Confederate office in time to save pay rolls, a large quantity of dried beef, and ten thousand pounds of brown sugar in hogsheads.
