St. Bernard School was established in 1891 by Perpetual Adoration at the request of Fr. Barias. On June 18, 1903, Mother M. Augustine signed a contract with J.A. Petty to build St. Bernard School at a cost of $13,000. The building was completed on May 4, 1905, and opened as a day and boarding school for students through eight grades. A high school was added in 1926. In 1949, the first metal building in Breaux Bridge collapsed. In 1959, the current school, located left of the old school, was completed, and a gym was added after the old school's demolition. In 1971, the Sister of Mary Holy Sacrament withdrew from teaching and the school closed. In August 1982, the school reopened as an elementary school under the direction of Msgr. Edward Fruge, Rene Calais, principle, and a group of dedicated parishioners.
