Christ Church in Westerly is the parish’s third building since the parish was organized in 1834. The present Gothic Revival church began with the laying of its cornerstone in 1891 and was consecrated on October 16, 1894. Designed by New York City architect Henry Congdon, who specialized in Episcopal church design, it was built of blue and red Westerly granite quarried locally by the Smith Granite Co. In 1905, a ten-bell chime cast by the Meneely Bell Co. of Troy, New York, was installed in the tower capped with a spire, giving the church its present-day appearance. The interior was renovated in 1964, when the organ and choir area were moved from the chancel to the rear of the building into a newly constructed balcony featuring the C.B. Fisk organ donated on June 13, 1965. Among its highlights is stained glass installed from 1892 to 2008 by designers including Charles Booth of London and New Jersey, Connick Associates of Boston, Reynolds, Francis and Rohnstock of Boston, and local Belgian-born artist Herman Verbinnen, while the St. Nicholas Chapel in the undercroft features windows by Whippell and Co. of Exeter, England. With its prominent tower and exceptional stonework, Christ Church is a major presence in this corner of the historic downtown area.
