Little Place Cemetery is a community cemetery serving the African American Womack Hill community and its descendants. Its establishment is linked to the founding of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, which grew from a brush arbor as early as 1879, and many of the church’s deacons are buried there. The oldest burial with a headstone dates to 1894, although many earlier graves were simple burials in deep graves with wooden caskets marked by wooden crosses or other items that have since deteriorated. Early burial records do not exist apart from headstones and memories passed down by community elders. Death records, obituaries, and descendants’ statements also identify it as the Cemetery on Womack Hill, Womack Hill Colored Cemetery, and the Little Cemetery on the Hill. In 1978, the landowners deeded the approximately two-acre cemetery to the Little Place Cemetery Association, which is largely made up of descendants of those buried there. Choctaw County, named for the Choctaw Nation of Native Americans, was established in 1847, and the 1850 U.S. census recorded a population of 8,379, including 3,769 people of African descent. Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, located 3 miles west on Womack Hill Road, stands in the historical center of the community. The Womack Hill community, Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, and Little Place Cemetery all trace their roots to the latter years of slavery and to communities established by freed men. As the community grew, the congregation formally organized and, according to its cornerstone, constructed a church building in 1887. The area’s population peaked in the 1920s with the rise of sawmills, agricultural resources, and steamboat trade along the Tombigbee River to Mobile and the Gulf Coast. The cemetery reflects a close-knit community of educators, homemakers, farmers, inventors, veterans, timber-men, dock workers, raftsmen on the Tombigbee River, and workers in the railroad and oil industries.
