Clement Anselm Evans, a Confederate brigadier general, soldier, lawyer, minister, statesman, and author, was born three-quarters of a mile west of here in 1834. Admitted to the bar at 18, elected county judge at 21, and state senator at 25, he later became a brigadier general and was severely wounded at the Monocacy River while serving under Gordon, who called him “that intrepid leader.” He took part in the last charge of the Army of Northern Virginia, commanding Gordon’s old division, and surrendered under Lee at Appomattox “with guns still hot from firing until the last hour.” He died in 1911.
