Jim Wells County was formed from Nueces County, created on March 11, 1911, and organized on May 6, 1911. It was named for Judge James B. Wells, an able lawyer, who was born near Aransas Pass, Texas, on July 12, 1854, and died at Brownsville on December 21, 1923. Alice is the county seat.
